Check the Fridge Temperature
- The ideal fridge temperature is between 3℃ and 5℃
- The ideal freezer temperature should be at -18℃
If you find that you need to change the temperature of your fridge freezer, it's important to keep in mind that it will take around 24 hours for your fridge to adjust to the changes you've made.
If you want to check how cold your fridge freezer is, the easiest way is to use a thermometer.
If you're checking the Fridge, place a thermometer in a glass of water overnight and check the temperature the first time you open the door the next morning.
If you're checking the freezer, place a thermometer between bags of frozen vegetables and leave it for about 8 hours or overnight then check the temperature reading.
Don't Overload it
Cramming a load of food into the fridge might seem like a good idea at the time, especially if you're only just running out of space, but we've all done it. Though, it can do more harm than good. When you cram the food in, you are in danger of preventing the cooling air from circulating and keeping all items at the right temperature and humidity.
The Key to Success is Segmentation
Many fruits give off natural gases as they start to ripen, making other nearby produce spoil faster. Store bananas, apples and tomatoes by themselves, and store fruits and vegetables in different compartments.
Preparation is Key
Sometimes, it is not possible to get through all the food we have and eat it before it starts to go off, so preparing and cooking the more perishable items, then freeze them for use throughout the month. This is especially good for easy pre-prepared lunches during the week for school or work.
Freeze your Dairy
Don't be afraid to freeze any dairy products you have. Items such as semi-skimmed and skimmed milk can be stored in the freezer and so can harder cheeses. A good idea is to cut them into smaller portions or grate some up so it's ready to use later.
Keep it Hydrated
It's a good idea to try wrapping any salad and herbs in a damp paper towel before storing them to avoid them drying out. This is a good way to keep them fresher for longer. You can also keep the stems of vegetables such as broccoli, celery and asparagus in water to help them stay fresh and crisp.
Stop Any Cross-Contamination
It's important to keep all raw meat, poultry and fish in its supermarket wrapping, or in airtight containers to stop it from touching or dripping onto other food and potentially spoiling them.
Keep It in or Keep It Out?
It may seem like a good idea to keep everything in the fridge freezer, in an attempt to slow down the process of the food going off, but some food will last that bit longer when you keep it outside of the fridge. This includes bread, bananas, pineapples, potatoes and onions.
Take a Quick Shelfie
When you pop out to the supermarket, don't just take your shopping list. Take a quick photo of the contents of your fridge, so you don't end up buying any unnecessary items that you don't really need.
