What Drum Size Do I Need?

The capacity of the machine you choose is one of the most important things to consider.

The drum size of a washing machine will indicate the weight of dry clothes that you can wash in one load. In the UK, washing machine drum sizes tend to range from 5kg to 12kg in capacity, with the most popular size drums usually being 9kg to 10kg.

When deciding on which drum size is right for you it is very important to consider your washing needs and habits. You should think about the size of your household and how many loads of washing you estimate to be putting on a week. For a medium-sized family, a 7-8kg drum would comfortably fit all of your clothes. If you do have a larger family, however, a larger drum may be necessary.

Don’t assume that the biggest drum is the best idea. If you don’t fill the drum to its full capacity, it will be costing you a lot more to run.

What Spin Speed Do I Need?

The removal of water from your clothes at the end of a washing programme is called a spin cycle. The most popular spin speed is up to 1,200rpm or 1,4000rpm. The maximum spin speed can go up to around 1,800 rpm. A machine with a good spin speed should be able to remove all of the water from your clothes at the end of a wash. This will ultimately reduce the amount of time you will need to place your clothes into the tumble dryer, which will then reduce the cost of running the machine.

What Programmes Do I Need?

Some common washing machine programmes that could be extremely helpful on your washing machine include;

  • Sports Programme - This programme is there to wash microfibre sports clothing. It is designed to wash our sweat marks and odours by having a longer wash cycle.
  • Quick Wash Settings - This is one of the most popular programmes! This programme will wash your clothes in a short amount of time.
  • Child Locks - Machines with child locks will come with two types of locks. One is through the control panel and works the same way as when you lock your mobile phone and the other is a safety lock on the door which will stop the door from closing, meaning little ones won't jam their fingers in the door.
  • Pre-Ironing - This programme will prevent creases from forming while the clothes are in the wash. This can be extra handy if you often have a lot of ironing to do.
  • Baby Care - This wash programme will run at a very high temperature, followed by several rinses to make sure as much detergent is removed as possible. Perfect for those with a newborn or sensitive skin.
  • Anti-Allergy - The Anti-allergy cycle is designed to remove allergens from a wash load.

Is Energy Efficiency Important?

Since December 2013, all washing machines have to have an energy rating of A or higher, up to a maximum rating of A+++.

This letter will correspond to a number on the 'Energy Efficiency Index'. This is the measure of the amount of electricity used by the machine annually, including any energy used whilst powered-off or in standby mode.

The A+++ model will be the most energy efficient and use the least water, and therefore will be the cheapest to run and the kindest to the environment.

What Integration Do You Want?

This is more one to think about if you dream of a beautifully fitted kitchen.

Freestanding washing machines are the most common type. They can be placed almost anywhere in your kitchen as long as they’re connected to a drain and a plug socket. Freestanding machines will come in a range of sizes from 5kg to 12kg and also come in a range of different colours. With freestanding washing machines, you will also find that they come with a wider range of drum capacities, colours and features.

Integrated washing machines are perfectly designed to fit behind cupboard doors and are a perfect choice for anyone who doesn’t want to show off their appliances in the design of their kitchen. This will create an elegant seamless effect in any kitchen. Integrated models are also a lot quieter as they have the extra cupboard door to buffer any noise made by the washing machine itself.
