The Average Lifespan of Appliances

Fridge Freezer

There are many fridge freezer models out there, so it’s important to consider which type will suit your needs, space and budget the most. On average, a good fridge freezer will last around 12 years. It’s important that you pay attention to the lifespan of your appliance and make sure it’s working properly because the last thing you want to be dealing with all the time is spoiled food. In extreme cases, if your fridge freezer isn’t working as it should and you’re dealing with spoiled foods, you don’t want anyone in your family to have to deal with a food-related illness. A properly working fridge should maintain a temperature of between 37 and 40 degrees.

Range Cooker

A range cooker can be a brilliant unit that combines both the cooking surface and chamber. It can last upwards of 15 to 20 years if it is properly maintained and look after. What’s more, most newer models also incorporate modern features such as self-cleaning options and can be fuel by either electric or gas.

Washing Machines and Tumble Dryer

Both washing machines and tumble dryers will usually have an average lifespan of around 8 to 12 years. To prolong performance, it’s a good idea to regularly clean out the lint trap and ducts in your dryer. What’s more, this can also reduce the risk of a fire hazard. Also, cleaning and when necessary replacing the hoses in both the washer and the dryer will help you get the most out of the machines and your money.

When Do I Need to Replace My Appliances?

You may like upgrading your appliance to the latest model because you want the current version with all of the new technology and bells and whistles, but it’s a whole different story when you need to replace the appliance because it’s completely stopped working. If the device has stopped working altogether, it might just be time for a replacement. A quick repair from a professional will do the job, but you may find that you’re always having parts serviced. With all the money you’ll be spending on these parts, in the long run, it’s probably best to start shopping around for new appliances.

Keep in mind that any average lifespan is just that – an average. Some may last longer than the project time and some may give out sooner. If you’ve had an appliance for 10 years or longer, remember that you may find it’s not working as efficiently as it once did, and it may just be time for a new one.

If your refrigerator isn’t as cool as it used to be, you may just have a defective thermostat, but there are many other working parts that will affect how your refrigerator is running, including fans, controls, condensers/compressors and door seals.

If you want to try and identify problems with your refrigerator, look out for the following problems:

  • Food doesn’t stay cold and is going off quicker than usual – the recommended temperature is 4 degrees
  • Excessive condensation inside the fridge, on the outside of the door or even frost in the freezer
  • The exterior is hot to the touch and the motor is constantly running and is noisy.
  • Electricity bills have spiked

There is a variety of common problems you may notice with an ageing dishwasher, including cloudy glasses, water spots on dishes and leaking during the cleaning cycle. You may not think it, but there are some problems that are only apparent on the interior and when it’s running. Some of these can include:

  • Turns off in the middle of the cycle
  • Won't fill completely with water or doesn't fully drain
  • Excessive strange loud noises coming from the dishwasher whilst it’s on – this could be a faulty motor or pump

Range Cooker

It’s a general rule of thumb that if the repair bill is more than 50 per cent of the value of the range, it’s a better idea to spend your money on a new one. There is a variety of common problems with range cookers including:

  • Igniter Failure
  • No longer properly regulates temperature - this will usually result in unevenly cooked food
  • Either oven or cooking surface won't heat up at all or gets way too hot
  • The self-cleaning feature has stopped working, or the door stats latched and locked, way after the cleaning cycle has been completed

Washing Machine and Tumble Dryer

Some of the most common problems you’ll find with these are:

  • The washing machine leaks or the drum doesn't completely fill up with water
  • The tumble dryer doesn't dry the clothes fully
  • The appliance moves or makes excessively loud noises during its cycle
