Mistake 1: Rubbing at Stains Too Much

Of course, some staind will need a little elbow grease to wash them out. Yet, you shouldn't find yourself rubbing at them furiously. Doing this can make the stain much worse and can even wear away the fabric. Instead, make sure to treat the stain as soon as possible and you'll be much more successful. Also, make sure to use a white cloth to clean the stain, so no colours transfer and dab instead of rubbing as this will help keep the stain contained.

Mistake 2: Way Too Much Detergent

Believe it or not, but excess detergent can in fact hold dirt in your clothes and collect in areas that won't always rinse clean such as under the collar, leading to bacteria build up. Instead, make sure to use half the detergent and then gradually increase this if your clothes aren't coming out clean. Though, if you have hard water, you may in fact need more soap than you are using.

Mistake 3: Incorrectly Filling the Washing Machine

If you have a top-loader washing machine and use liquid detergent, surely you're filling the machine with water, then adding soap and then your clothes, right? Well, really, this doesn't matter. The routine is one of the past, used to reduce the amount of residue on the fabric and in the machine. Though, modern detergents are now phosphate-free and won't harm your clothes. So, as long as you're not using bleach, you won't need to add clothing after the water. In fact, try clothes, then water and then soap.

Mistake 4: Washing Items Best Fit to 'Dry-Clean"

You don't necessarily have to panic if you accidentally wash an item made to be dry-cleaned as most can be hand washed and air-dried. Though, if you need to check how an item will stand up in the wash, try moistening a cotton swab with mild detergent and dab it on a hidden seam to see if any dye comes off. If not, dunk the fabric in soapy water a couple of times, then rinse it and immediately roll it in a towel.

Mistake 5: Leaving Zips Unzipped

If you leave zips unzipped, the metal teeth can snag on delicate and woven materials that are in the same load.

Mistake 6: Washing Shirts With All The Buttons Done Up

This seems like a good idea at first, but washing shirts buttoned up can cause undue stress on both buttons and buttonholes. So, make sure to take the time to unbutton your shirts before washing.

Mistake 7: Overusing Bleach

Yes, bleach is an excellent cleaner, yet you should think twice before you reach for it. Yet contrary to popular belief, you don't need bleach to get rid of protein stains such as blood and sweat. A much more natural remedy is to boil a big pot of water with a few lemon slices for a few minutes, and to toss any stained clothes in.
